Amperzahn formed in 2005 from an already established yet un-named garage band. Well, it would have been a garage band had a garage been available at the time. In fact it was more a lounge band that played garage band music in the lounge of the bass players flat.
I played guitar and vocals and was the songwriter in Amperzahn for almost four years, and it was one of the hugest learning curves I’ve been around. I had never fronted a band before, never been in a recording studio, never really even made the proper transition from acoustic guitar to electric. Everything was so new to me, and when I look back now at our early recordings, it still amazes me how much better we got over the years! I hope to never stop growing and learning as a musician.
We released three sets of recordings with three different drummers. The most recent was our 5 track E.P. theSE CREaTures, you can find the tracks off this streaming at the top of the page, or you can even buy them from Amplifier.co.nz. All our released recordings were recorded at The Rock Factory which is the studio owned by our keyboard player Michelle Klaessens. Some of our very early recordings can be found below and are quite rough, but I felt I had to include them for posterities sake.
Our second release was kind of impromptu - it was on sale for one night only, New Years Eve 2007. These are the recordings marked NYS (New Years Special) on the playlist, and were largely unfinished demos from an album we never released. Liam Mills on drums for this lot.
Our first release was an untitled, or perhaps self titled EP that was recorded in the very early days of the band. It featured songs that haunted me for years with a sillyness that was hard to shake. See the flying cars video and the last two tracks on the play list if you must! Paul Southan on drums, Michelle Klaessens wasn’t in the band at this stage, but she recorded us and put in some backing vocals for Five Steps. Michelle Key made the Flying Cars video for a bit of fun - I think it’s very funny.
